They're Doing in America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the US president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and then began independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently research projected his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are atheists or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to evade covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses states that when someone steals your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The obvious and direct truth that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest of Us

Hence I have become heartened to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by reference to the finest about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it suggest pretending the most negative of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both modesty and belief, a combination that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
