Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
